This is another of those posts that I waited for Jared to do, and he contented himself with his Twitter post. I am not content with that. Jared spent a lot of time working on our new (and improved) deck. Jared was the impetus for this project. He was really excited to improve upon our home. (I’m not sure how he felt in the middle of it, but he persevered nonetheless.) He tore down our old and practically useless deck three summers ago. He spent that summer digging the post holes. (We have, um, shall we say, rather rocky soil.) The next summer, not very much changed because Jared was helping me with a new addition to our family (hi, Sarah!) and working on the bathroom. (See previous post.)
And this summer? He finally finished it. He posted a few pictures of his progress through his Twitter feed, but I’m so happy with it that I want to share what he toiled so long to do. Finish date: Oct. 17, 2009. Way to go and what an accomplishment.
Here’s a before picture for comparison. This was taken straight out of our glass door – you can see the edge of the frame on the far left. It was pretty much a platform with stairs to get to the backyard, which isn’t much of a deck at all. And then it had that ugly vinyl railing. Blech.
This is what we have now, after much sweat, labor and a little blood. The deck furniture will have to wait until spring, but I’m very happy with our new deck.
