Timothy decided rather last minute that he wanted to participate in his school’s spelling bee this year. He made it into the top three in his class which allowed him to progress to the schoolwide competition for third- through sixth-graders.
Unfortunately, after making it through the class level, he didn’t study the list as much as he could have (he practically forgot all about it, actually, and did some last-minute cramming). But he did well, making it through five rounds successfully. This is him with one of his classmates before the schoolwide bee.
He was fairly confident for the first few rounds, but as the later rounds progressed, he started to write down his answers first.
He made it to the sixth round, spelling crabby, blissful, brainstorm, echoed and microphone correctly before getting tripped up by adequate (he spelled it “adiquate”). By then, less than 15 of the original 40 starters were left.
He earned a consolation prize of a candy bar (he chose pretzel M&Ms) and we stayed to watch the winner be crowned (first and second place went to two sixth-graders).
He’s already planning on participating in the spelling be next year. Good job, Timothy!

I agree, good job, Timothy!! What fun, and what good experience.
ReplyDeleteGood for you Timothy! My guess is you won't ever misspell adequate again. Next year you'll give the sixth graders a run for their prize. (Janet says reading is one of the best ways to become a good speller.)
